Sandi Skerk - Friuli, Italy

ROCK + PURITY + FRUIT + SANDI SKERK = GENIUS

Friuli's Sandi Skerk- far more humble than his wines- is finally getting the attention he deserves. Though unknown in America only a few years ago, today the demand for his wines far outstrips the modest 400 cases per wine he produces each vintage. If you think terroir does not speak; put your ears and palate to the glass...

Team E&R have been frequent visitors to Sandi's Carso appellation near Trieste in NE Italy. Beginning in 2010 via our "almost direct imports" program we partnered with Sandi to insure Oregon became only the second state in America to offer his wines. Since then his wines have received international kudos and awards along with overdue recognition. It all couldn't happen to a better winemaker.

FRIULI'S CARSO:
AN OUTLIER ARRIVES

Italy's miniscule Carso appellation is not like everywhere else. Its unique plateau of limestone simply juts out of the land above Trieste and bordering Slovenia. The reddish Carso topsoil- distinctively thin and iron-rich - effects the wines like few appellations in the world. "The place" stamps its identity on the grapes so much so that the individual wines- unencumbered by new wood or human intervention- taste more of place than most pure expressions from other terroir. The wines teem with character and life - a cool magic we adore when grape essence and clarity merge with the character of the ground to produce unique, beautiful wine. Sandi emphasizes purity by farming organically- making traditional wine as naturally as possible.

When you visit Sandi,  you will find him right at home in his deep quartz-walled cellar (chiseled out of a fissure with diamond cutter machines) which allows his wines to rest in the quiet splendor of a rock chapel housed below his well-tended vines. It is an ambiance fitting perfectly with each of his wholly original bottles of wine.
