FATTORIA LE TERRAZZE:
JEWEL OF THE MARCHES

The Rosso Conero is back!

Marche Chardonnay IGT “Le Cave” 2019
Expressly delightful Chardonnay! Antonio's 2019 is just released and it is ultra-gustosissima (ultra-yummy). With its fertile soil, Le Terrazze's vines - a mere half mile from the sea - enjoy perfect conditions to maximize flavor and complexity. The 2019 Le Cave Chardonnay is a rich affair; clean, fresh, stony and delicious. $19.00.

Spumante Brut Metodo Classico “Donna Giulia” 2019
Pretty cool “one of a kind” juice here - 100% sparkling Montepulciano from the Marche. Yes, if you remember we offered Donna Giulia (named after Antonio’s daughter) about a decade ago. The wildly popular sparkler here, was less so in the Marche at the time, so Antonio begrudgingly halted production. Then after a few years (as he told us) everyone was asking for Donna Giulia, so he began to produce it again! The process takes time, including a couple of years aging. Here is how the winery describes the new 2019 “Colour of straw with a very slight pink tinge, tending towards onion skin with ageing. Floral notes of white petals and bread crust. At the palate the fine perlage concedes space to the strong character of Montepulciano, making our Donna Giulia the ideal companion during the entire meal.” Only 18 bottles available. $34.00

THE ROSSO CONERO IS
$16.20 PER BOTTLE

Rosso Conero DOC 2017
As we noted earlier, and in tasting the 2017, we were able to grab the last of the vintage, and the price is some 15%+ lower! We think you need to go back to the 2010 to match the quality of this vintage. The chintzy-score-giving wine critics at Vinous gave this 92 points (crazy for the price), writing - “the 2017 Le Terrazze Rosso Conero dazzles the palate with mineral-drenched tart cherries complemented by brisk acids with a tug of youthful tannin. This is a beautifully pure expression of Montepulciano fruit…” This shows you a reason this wine has been the shop’s best selling red for years. 100% pure Montepulciano - made in large, old oak barrels. $18.00 ($16.20 PER BOTTLE WITH ANY SIX BOTTLES)

Impressive, large old barrels at Fattoria Le Terrazze.

Conero Riserva “Sassi Neri” DOCG 2017
Antonio's family has been making wine at the Terrazze homestead for 130 years working with the Montepulciano grape. Undeniably their finest version released each year is DOCG Riserva Sassi Neri, produced from 100% Montepulciano. Taking it's name from a nearby beach of black stones, Sassi Neri is among the top Marches Montepulciano we know of. At Vinous, their remarks about this wine: “The 2017 Conero Riserva Sassi Neri bursts from the glass with an intense display of wild berries, sweet sage, mocha and smoky crushed stone. Silky and potent, it drenches the palate in tart red berries laced with sour citrus and savory spices. Its fruit nearly masks the layer of lingering, fine-grained tannins, while residual acids maintain admirable freshness through the licorice-tinged finale. Wow; the 2017 is a massive rendition of Sassi Neri, yet it finds amazing balance for such a dry and warm year. This is a varietal Montepulciano from forty-five-year-old vines growing in calcareous clay soils and completely refined in barrique.” Just 18 bottles available. $39.00

Marche Rosso “Chaos” IGT 2017
Antonio (also a scientist) calls this blend "Chaos" based on the Chaos Theory of Mathematics. One day over a drink he explained it to us. We had another drink. The new 2017 is a beauty - from Vinous: “A mix of cooling mint, autumnal spice, dusty cedar box, dried roses and red currants creates an inviting bouquet as the 2017 Rosso Chaos unfolds in the glass. The Chaos is deeply textural, silky and refined, with a polished array of ripe blackberries and cherry motivated by juicy acidity, as saline-minerals and hints of fine tannins collect toward the close. While structured, there’s already so much pleasure to be found here, finishing fresh yet youthfully tense with a sour citrus and peppery herbal twang. The 2017 is a total success for the vintage but it could use a couple of years in the cellar to come fully together. The 2017 is a blend of 50% Montepulciano, 25% Syrah and 25% Merlot.”’The blend of Montepulciano, Merlot and Syrah is not in compliance with the Marche rules, hence an IGT wine. We think of (this) Chaos as a “Super Marche” wine. As we noted for our Chaos Theory addicts - in this case Chaos is composed of (here comes the math) 50% Montepulciano, 25% Merlot and 25% Syrah (and now the other math) from vineyards of 1ha of Syrah, 10.8ha of Montepulciano and 1.6 Merlot. (If the 1.6ha left Ancona at 12:15 pm...) For even better Math the 2017 Chaos is a steal at $37.00

AND THE UNIVERSALLY RARE RED:
VISIONS OF J CONERO RISERVA DOCG 2015

Conero Riserva “Visions of J” DOCG
From a selection the estates top grapes and barrels, Visions is produced only in the best years. From Vinous in the 2015 “The 2015 Conero Riserva Vision of J. leaps from the glass with a vivid and seductive display of crushed ripe cherries complemented by sweet pipe tobacco, mint and hints of pine. It’s velvety-smooth and elegant, contrasting tart black currants and minerals over a core of salty acids. For all its power and girth, there’s an underlying energy here, along with a push and pull of citrusy tension and briary fruits that saturate throughout the lightly structured finale. The 2015 is already showing beautifully after a short decanting, yet another year or two of cellaring should help to smooth out any of its remaining hard edges. Vision of J. is varietal Montepulciano sourced from a single hectare that’s planted in clay, sand and limestone soils within the Numana zone of Conero.” One case available. $69.00
